Business Goes Vertical at Green Spirit Farms

Vertical gardening sends growing skyward. Vertical gardening sends growing skyward.

Michigan's Green Spirit Farms is up and underway, and enjoying well-deserved success. An offshoot of Fountainhead Engineering LTD, the farm is producing lettuce, basil, spinach, kale, arugula, peppers, tomatoes, stevia, strawberries, and brussel sprouts for local restaurants and supermarkets in addition to a farmer's market, which they host themselves.

Green Spirit is focusing on growing their produce hydroponically through vertical methods, as well as in rotating Volksgardens. Using 90% less water than traditional farming, the facility is boasting impressive yields as well, with as many as 27 heads of lettuce per square foot.

Daniel and Milan Kluko, the two men behind the farm, set their sights on hydroponic growing out of an interest in sustainable agriculture. “This is not a niche business, it’s not something novel, this is a necessity for the human race to continue to live,” says Daniel Kluko.

The farm also recycles water, composts, uses carbon neutral energy and ships their product in compostable packaging.
