What Other Brand Names are Giving the Armani Suit a Run For Its Money?

Find out what suit designers are competing with Armani. Find out what suit designers are competing with Armani.

Every man’s wardrobe should include at least one suit. Not just any suit, either. We’re talking a nice designer suit that makes you look good. If you browse through your closet and realize you don’t have a decent suit (or heaven forbid - you don’t have one at all), it’s time to go shopping. Everyone knows Armani is a leading designer for menswear, but what other choices do you have? What brand names are giving the Armani suit a run for its money?

Ralph Lauren began his company in 1970 with just a collection of ties. Now the Ralph Lauren brand is a leading name in designer menswear. Two of our favorites include the Three-Button Charcoal and the exclusive Black Label Anthony Wool Pinstripe. The $1400 Three-Button suit is tailored in Italy from extra-fine wool with an updated, leaner silhouette; slightly shortened rise, and narrowed lapels. The jacket is tailored with a notched collar; soft, sloping shoulders, and double-vented back. The trousers have double forward pleats and unfinished hem for custom tailoring. A new twist on this classic suit flatters you with a streamlined fit, while charcoal is an ideal color for any occasion.

The Black Label Anthony Wool Pinstripe is another popular Italian suit from Ralph Lauren for $1700 (on sale in December for $1200). The elegant pinstripes give a distinguished air to this all-season wool gabardine suit. The jacket has two buttons with four-button cuffs, while the slim pants have a flat front and finished curtain waistband.

Slightly less expensive suits are available from Hugo Boss - a fine choice for contemporary designs. For under $800, the dark grey Two-Button Pinstripe is an elegant, slim-fitting suit made with high-quality virgin wool. The jacket features flap pockets and a slit at the center back. The flat front trousers are regular cut with classic French pockets. We also love the Contemporary Slim Fit Two-Button Suit by HUGO for $1,000. This extremely narrow-cut suit is made with pure shorn wool with unique contrast lining. The single-breasted, two-button jacket features elaborate hand sewn-look top stitching around the edges – ideal for the sophisticated businessman. The Slim Three-Piece suit by BOSS normally goes for around $1,100 but is currently on sale for under $800. It’s easy to see why this Italian-made figure-defining suit is one of their best-sellers. The innovative solid fabric contrasts with the light lining and collar facing for a very striking look. James Bond anyone?

Another designer giving Armani a run for its money is Brooks Brothers. Since 1818, Brooks Brothers have loyally provided their customers with merchandise of the highest quality. Their suits have a natural, almost shirt-like line of the shoulder and a clean drape of the jacket front. The Saxxon wool they use is produced exclusively for Brooks Brothers, and is among the most prized and expensive in the world. Our top picks are the Golden Fleece Herringbone Double Stripe ($1600), Saxxon Plain Weave Madison Fit ($1900), and the Regent Fine Stripe 1818 ($1100).

There’s no doubt Armani will be around for years to come, but you do have other options when suit shopping. Calvin Klein and Versace are also top contenders, with a wide selection and fine designs. Take some time and try on a few different designers until you find the perfect fit.
